Question: What’s going on on Main Street?
Answer: The city is replacing 70-year-old clay sewer and water pipes that have been leaking for years. While they’re at it, storm water also will be taken care of. Once the underground work is done, the street and sidewalks on the first four blocks of South Main will be replaced with concrete.

Question: How am I supposed to get around?
Answer: Boardwalks will replace the sidewalks but most downtown businesses have spruced up their back door entrances and signs in the alleys will help you locate them. If a store doesn’t have access through a back door, you can go through a neighboring store and use the boardwalk to get there. To make them safe, the alleys will be closed to vehicle traffic with two exceptions: 1) the alley behind the Post Office and to the Northwoods Bank drive-up will remain open, and 2) delivery trucks will be allowed to remove the barricades to make their stops. A crossing from one side of Main to the other will be provided every two blocks.

Question: Where do I park?
Answer: If the side streets are filled, there is a municipal lot at 3rd Street and Pleasant and additional parking at a number of sites. A parking plan was created to guide you. It is located under “maps” on this website and copies also are available at downtown stores.

Question: How long is this going to take?
Answer: The biggest inconvenience will be the first two weeks (Aug. 2-13). The tentative schedule calls for the street to be paved by the end of October. This is a two-year project. Next spring crews will be back to work on the alleys, side streets (between Main and Highway 71 and Main and Pleasant Avenue), and Main Avenue south of 5th Street.

Question: What’s Main going to be like when the work is done?
Answer: Center parking will remain on our beautiful 100-foot wide street, but crosswalks will be more clearly marked and nodes added at corners to shorten the walk and increase pedestrian safety. The sidewalks will have some decorative stamping and trees, benches, bike racks, attractive waste containers and other enhancements will be added at the corner nodes next spring.
