Itasca’s Presenters Under the Pines: Manoominikewin (harvesting wild rice)

September 20, 2023

Learn about the annual harvest of manoomin (wild rice) from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, September 20 at the Picnic Shelter and the Lake Itasca Amphitheater area in the picnic grounds. Demonstrations of parching, jigging, fanning and cooking will complement presentations on Anishinaabe traditions and harvest methods, including tools. Gerald and Delina White, annual gatherers of manoomin from the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, will answer questions and provide insight into the natural history of manoomin over the past 70 years. This program is coordinated by The Nature Conservancy, University of Minnesota, and Itasca State Park.
