This webcam shows the beginning of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca where the mighty river begins its 2,552-mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico. Each year more than half a million visitors from around the globe visit Minnesota’s Itasca State Park, 20 miles north of Park Rapids. At Lake Itasca you can walk across the Mississippi headwaters and imagine how this tiny stream becomes miles wide as it enters the Gulf of Mexico. Itasca is not only Minnesota’s first state park, but it is the only major park available at the source of one of the world’s four greatest rivers: the Amazon, the Nile, the Yangtze and the Mississippi.
